The current outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus running rampant in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and which has now reached land in America and Spain, is something for residents of Trinidad and Tobago to be seriously concerned about.
So far it has been reported there have been 7,500 confirm infections worldwide, with a death toll of 3,400 and counting
The Government stated it is putting things in place, like training, equipment, greater vigilance at ports of entry and earmarking of the Caura Hospital as a quarantine site, etc, but is that enough? Are we looking down the road at Carnival 2015, with thousands of visitors coming to our shores?
This virus is a global epidemic and we need to be proactive and protect ourselves. I think we should look at cancelling Carnival 2015 if this outbreak continues to wreak havoc around the world. If this virus was to reach our shores, it would be a catastrophe to our people and our economy. Our health care service is incapable of handling something of that magnitude.
I hope the Government and all concerned with Carnival can consider this and make an early call as to what we will do regarding Carnival 2015.
